Abstract
Objectives: To determine the effect of milk and dairy food intake on bone mineral density (BMD) in middle aged women.

Methods: Seven hundred middle aged women were interviewed milk and dairy food intake and measured anthropometric parameters. BMDs of lumbar spine and femeral neck were measured by dual energy x-ray bsorptiometry(DEXA). The relationship between milk and dairy food intake and BMD was analyzed.

Results: The middle aged women were divided to three groups according to milk and dairy food intake. Lower group was lower 20% of total and their milk intake was less than 21.3g/day. Higher group was upper 20% of total and their milk intake was more than 273.3g/day. Higher group showed higher T-score in lumbar spine BMD than mid and low group. However, there was no difference in T-score in femur neck BMD.

Conclusion: Milk and diary food is excellent dietary source of calcium. The women who had more milk than others have significantly better lumbar BMD.
